For sure: You can do it extreme and turn your face to zero waste. In this case, I highly recommend Bea Johnson’s Zero Waste Home book which changed my mind also. Minimalism is a mindset that encourages you to focus on what truly adds value to your life and let go of the rest. (I mean dust-collecting items and company.) I have excellent news: When applied to your finances, minimalism can be a powerful tool for achieving your money goals as well. I know it because it helped me save a ton of money during the last decade. I started my journey when I was approximately 21 years old.
Getting Started with Minimalism
I do believe now you need some great advice to start on the path of minimalism. When you have no idea how or you grow up in a messy home it could be challenging to get rid of items and not to buy things anymore. So here is a short guide:
The first step: Decluttering Your Space and Finances: Ask yourself: “Does this add value to my life?” If not, it might be time to let it go and not buy similar items anymore. Check your monthly budget and analyze the costs! But do not do everything at once! Let’s say: in the first months you check your kitchen and your food expenses. Then the second month you check your bathroom and your makeup purchases and so on!
Maybe you will realize that you spend 300 Dollars on unnecessary food every month and you throw the most food away. So you can start to buy less food and save money, or use first all the makeup you have before you purchase something new. This is also a saving! Little habits, big money!
The second step is adopting Minimalist Habits: Develop routines that support a simpler lifestyle. This could include meal planning to reduce food waste, embracing a capsule wardrobe to simplify your fashion choices, or implementing a strict budgeting system. The third step is to cultivate a Minimalist Mindset: Learn to appreciate experiences over things. Focus on relationships, personal growth, and creating memories rather than accumulating possessions. If you develop this mindset you are not gonna miss the items and you will be able to save a huge amount of money! Just imagine you will be able to pay back your debt and enjoy your debt-free life. Your life is gonna turn into an investing lifestyle which is great!
The Financial Benefits of Minimalism
Embracing minimalism can have a profound impact on your financial health and of course bank account balance. I am giving you now some motivation why to do so, because without motivation you are not gonna do anything! You need to find the inner passion to do so!
Reduced Spending: By focusing on needs rather than wants, you naturally spend less. This is gonna be the start of your “new me” challenge. I can remember when I started and I was able to say no to many unnecessary things which made me mentally free. No more pushing feeling to buy, and a bad feeling if you can’t spend your time in some mall.
Increased Savings: With reduced expenses, you have more money to save and invest. I started this journey back then as a must, because of a lack of money and possibilities, but it turned out as a high saving percentage of my monthly income, which gives me financial stability and a calm mind. I have not worried about bills for years, and this is the best feeling if you know you have the resources and a growing portfolio!
Debt Reduction: Use the money you save to pay down debts faster. I have never had consumer debt ever in my life, but if you have one: like for a TV purchase, then with a switched mindset you must be able to realize that you waste a lot of money and you will say no to unneeded purchases in the long term, which reduces all your debt instantly!
Greater Financial Clarity: With fewer financial obligations, and purchases it’s easier to see and achieve your money goals. So if you want to collect money to put your first home deposit down, then it will be way easier!
Minimalism and Personal Growth
Minimalism isn’t just about money—it’s about creating space in your life for what truly matters. So money is a side benefit, but there are plenty more great reasons:
Improved Focus: With less clutter, both physical and mental, you can concentrate on your goals and passions. You can’t feel overwhelmed in a clean and minimalist environment and you have more time also! So if you need to clean less, like washing only 5 mugs, because you don’t have more, then it is easier than washing 40 of them, right? (And cheaper also, because you will make a new habit of using only one or two. I have one and my husband has one. That’s all. I do not even consider buying another one before one is damaged. We have had them like for 2 years now as a pair, and maybe 15 glasses altogether which I still find too much sometimes. But I do not need to think about things like: OMG! From which one should I drink my latte today? From the nearest darling! That’s all! So I can focus on important things instead of daily unimportant choices. I know I sound like a man but think about why I do so!)
Reduced Stress: Fewer possessions and financial commitments mean less to worry about. Yes, easier to move or just live in your home. Cleaning is a big stress and mostly a female job in the family. I remember when we got a huge amount of toys for my son after birth and how I felt when he turned 10 months old and left everything everywhere. I put 90% of the toys away and rotate them when I feel he gets bored. You can clearly agree that he can’t play with all of the toys on the same day and have a clean home at the same time. It reduced my mommy-home-mess stress a lot!
More Freedom: With less tying you down, you have more freedom to pursue your dreams. Exactly, so when my baby sleeps I do not need to put everything back in place, and instead of that, I can work on my dreams!
Challenges of Minimalism
While the benefits are significant, transitioning to a minimalist lifestyle can be challenging:
Overcoming Consumer Culture: Our society often equates success with possessions. Changing this mindset takes time and effort. If your friends are crazy about the newest mode it will be challenging, maybe they will laugh about the idea, but you need to stay strict. Also remember, you can’t change your parents if they enjoy living with a lot of stuff surrounding them, and it could be also stressful if your partner is your opposite! Thankfully it is time to talk about real values and common financial goals!
Dealing with Sentimental Items: It can be hard to let go of things with emotional attachments. For sure, you are not the only one! I have things from my aunt who passed away years ago and I love those things, but what I purchased by myself I don’t do a big deal to get rid of it. You need to make your own rules. Such as: If there is a book that I will no longer read, I will get rid of it and give it to somebody else.
Balancing Minimalism with Family Life: If you have a family, getting everyone on board can be tricky. With smaller children, it is easier because this is the way they grow up, but sometimes saying no to crazy and expensive toys could be hard! Give them some reason and motivation to cooperate!
